everyday life: evaluations

I can’t believe it’s that time of year AGAIN.  Starting Tuesday I will officially be spending too many days and nights sitting at the ballpark freezing my schnitzel off.  I know many of you in other places in the world think that I am a big whimp, but seriously, it gets cold and wet here this time of year!!:)

Each year things get  little more serious and this year I feel like things are over the top for a bunch of 7 and 8 year olds.  I mean, they honestly had to go to “evaluations” in order to be DRAFTED on to a team.  WHAT????   The coaches all sat out in the field for entire weekends with giant spreadsheets watching kids try out in order to select their players.

John and I have talked about this and BOTH of us remember that when we were this age you signed up to be on a team, showed up to play, they gave you a t-shirt with your team sponsor’s name screen printed on the front and you played the game.  Now, (at least around here) you have to show original copies of birth certificates and 2 proof of residency forms (EVERY YEAR!!!) just to be placed on a team.  Not to mention that you have to be dressed head to toe in the approved uniform to be able to play.  AND, if it’s cold and you don’t want your kid to freeze, you HAVE to have a BLACK long sleeved athletic shirt to wear under your jersey because the league does not allow white sleeves…am I nuts, or does that seem just a LITTLE over the top when you’re 7????;)WOW!!!  Ok, enough of a rant!! lol!!:)  I just can’t handle the pressure!!!  lol!:)

At least baseball means lots of time outdoors to shoot!!:)

I just saw your post…remember…’baseball is life’ (I have a hat that says this)! heehee Yes, the drafts occur every year, and birth certificates are mandated across the country, especially if they make it to ‘All Stars” at the end of the season. Yup, really…cheating happens. The white long sleeves are forbidden across the country for pitchers…white sleeves may reflect the sun and interfere with pitching. Isn’t it amazing how serious this game can be at this young age? *smile*
I have taken my son to every game of his since t-ball and I love it too! He’s been in ‘travel ball’ the last few years (now 14 yrs young)…just wait for this adventure, playing at miniature replica’s of MLB ball parks…lots of driving and expense, but if your child loves this game, it’s still ‘fun’! And, your right…the picture opportunities outdoors are fantastic!

Amen on that! We went through the whole baseball thing for years with my oldest son, now it is time to start with Max! the best quote I heard years ago when Parker was about 8 on a team was from one of the dads about a cute little boy on our team. He said” I don’t even know why he came out for baseball, it’s not like he has a future in it!” Hello! Are people out of their minds? Well, all that being said, it is a lot of fun for the little guys. And it so fun to sit out and watch the little guys. There is nothing like sitting on the bleachers and cheering and of course buying lots of junk at the snack bar. It’s a great ole pasttime! Gotta love it!

He showed up to try out in a pair of jeans??? – now nobody is going to pick him :) I would love to drop a big bucket of “real life” over your town. We did coach pitch last year with Rachel – so laid back, thank goodness. Poor girl has NO skills, but she had a great time.

Yes, I think it’s a little over the top. Hope they have a great season!
