let’s party: throw a gingerbread man party

Big boys are hard to plan parties for! That’s what I’ve decided. It’s easy to send everyone to play Lazer Tag, have a chuck e cheese party, etc., but it’s hard to come up with creative, fun parties where you can do something fun without it looking too girly and cutesy…know what I mean?? Last year I threw this party for my son during Christmas break. I just wanted a chance for him to invite some boys over, load themselves up on pizza and sugar, and be rowdy. We decided on a gingerbread man party. It was simple and fun. This year I have something a little more crazy up my sleeve and it requires a little more prep…I’ll be sure to share that later this month. But for now, here’s the gingerbread man:

I bought some gingerbread man kits at my local trader joes, loaded the table with candy and sweets and let the boys have at it. I was thoroughly impressed with their creations. They were actually much more creative and took a lot more time to work with them than I expected.

The table decor was made up of things from around the house. Andy’s already decorated gingerbread house, a few fake table top trees, a plastic tablecloth made clean up a breeze!

The cute little gingerbread dishes Ifound at Michaels for .99 cents each. A deal!! They worked well to hold icing for decorating. After the kids made their gingerbread men we had pizza and watched A Christmas Carol. It was a fun, easy and relatively inexpensive evening for the boys. I scored some big mom points with minimal work…that’s my kind of party!!

Make This: THanksgiving Turkey Cookies

It was Ashley’s turn to take snack to school yesterday. As much as I sometimes dread coming up with something fun to send with her (she ALWAYS asks for something special) but, I also realize that my days of having someone little ask me to make them something special are numbered…pretty soon they’ll probably be embarassed of me, SO I’m going to take full advantage while I still can! She gets such a kick out of it and the smile on her face is totally worth all the work!! I kept seeing pictures of these all over pinterest and decided to give it a whirl…at 11pm. Not so smart! Yes, they are a little labor intensive, but so fun!

Here’s what you’ll need:
mini reeses peanut butter cups
oreos…double stuff are the best
whoppers
candy corn (5 or 6 per turkey)
orange icing (i used candy melts so they would harden faster)
chocolate chips (i melted these down in the microwave and used them to fuse the PB cup and the whopper onto the oreos and the piece of candy corn onto the face so they would harden and stay put…i thought it might work better than icing)
white icing

I was just winging it from the pictures that I saw online (yes, pun intended…winging it…turkey wing…get it?? lol!! it’s late!) I was going to make a tutorial for you, but then I was too lazy and found this great video online to help! Yours will probably turn out better than mine if you watch the video!

Well, you all saw the cutie I was creating this party for yesterday. I wanted to create something around something that she really liked. Her mom and dad said she LOVES old mcdonald had a farm…so off I went creating!! It was so fun to add a little glam twist to the farm theme adding in some crystals and lots of pink to the bits of rustic. The color combo of pink, blue, red and black and white, was super fun!! Here are a few shots of the party/food set-up:

I’ll share my secret with you…the grocery store bakery!! I took pictures of the cookies I wanted into the head baker at my local store and she created these for me for WAY less than having other custom cookies made!! They were YUMMY and SO cute!! Always check your local grocery store first for cakes, cookies, etc. They are often talented bakers who would love to do something out of the ordinary for you!

It was SO fun putting this party together!! I hope you like it!

I know you have heard me say this many times before, but I seriously have the best neighbors. Over the last 6 or 8 months there has been a lot of change on our little block and I have lost some great friends which has really made me sad, but I’ve been fortunate enough to gain some great new ones too! These girls are so much fun! They share my love of party planning and we have had loads of fun planning things together as all of our kids have birthdays since they’ve moved in. This year I decided to make Andy’s valentines about as easy as it gets! You can buy these cute .75 ounce popcorn boxes on amazon (50 for 8.00). With a little cardstock and some microwave popcorn to fill em up, I’m in for about 30-45 minutes total and I think they turned out pretty cute. What do you think?
